Coronavirus: One death and 569 new cases on Tuesday (updated)

One more person died from Covid-19 and 569 new infections have been detected after 14,309 tests, the health ministry said on Tuesday.

The number of deaths since March has reached 134 while 50 people were in critical condition.

The number of cases detected in the Republic since the start of the pandemic is 25,208, the ministry said.

The death concerns an 84-year-old woman with underlying health issues who was being treated at Famagusta general hospital.

Covid has so far claimed 89 men and 45 women. The average age was 80.

The ministry said 179 people were being treated in hospital on Wednesday with 50 in critical condition. Twenty-five were intubated while six were in the ICU but not on an ventilator.

Nineteen people were in high dependency units.

Of the 569 new cases, 151 concerned contacts of previously confirmed infections. They were detected in 819 samples.

Most infections, 359, were detected in 10,889 samples tested through rapid antigen tests.

Four cases were among 612 travellers tested at the Republic’s two airports while 36 others were detected in 1,170 samples tested by private laboratories.

Labs also found one case among 212 people referred by GPs while state hospitals detected 21 infections in 449 samples tested.

The majority of cases detected by antigen tests were in Nicosia, 129 (3,996 tests), followed by Larnaca, 92 (1,990), Limassol, 82 (1,862), Famagusta, 27 (581), and Paphos, 20 (579).

Two cases were detected in care homes in Nicosia and Larnaca and four in the National Guard.

Turkish Cypriots announced the death of an 80-year-old man from Covid and 26 new cases from 3,073 tests on Tuesday.

The number of deaths in the north has reached nine while infections since March now stood at 1,692.
