Online events to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust

Trio

Perhaps there is never an entirely appropriate way to commemorate victims, yet art, be it music, theatre or film, can express some consolation in a way that simple words cannot. As such, there are a few independent events taking place next week supported by the embassies of Austria and of Israel in Cyprus. Of course, we are still in lockdown, so naturally they are all online.

On January 27, Austrian band Klezmer Trio & Friends will present their new album Klezmer Explosion at an online concert, which is now available on their YouTube channel (@Moritz Weiß Klezmer Trio) until February 7.

This Trio from Styria has been playing together since 2015, skilfully interweaving their interpretation of the Jewish musical tradition of Klezmer. The band finds its own distinctive and captivating sound by joining elements of Jazz or classical music on a high artistic level. This characterises their new album. At the heart of it lies an eternal longing for a life in equality for all people, reinforced by drums and trombones.

The Embassy of Israel in Cyprus will also hold online screenings of the film The Song of Names from January 27 to 30. The story revolves around Martin Simmonds who has been haunted throughout his life by the mysterious disappearance of his best friend, Polish Jewish virtuoso violinist Dovidl Rapaport. Thirty-five years later, Martin discovers that Dovidl may still be alive and sets out on an intercontinental search to find him and learn why he left. The film will be shown in English with subtitles in Greek and viewers can receive the link to the screening by registering here.

Also on next week is an online presentation of the performance ‘Is it true you will always wait for me?’. A play by Andromahi Lindahl and her dance group Asomates Dinamis, based on Leon Saltiel’s book ‘Don’t Forget Me’ about letters from three Jewish mothers to their sons from the ghetto of Thessaloniki. The play was presented in Nicosia last November and now it is on for four online screenings on January 27 (donation-based) and January 29, 30 and 31 (€8) at 9pm. This performance will be in Greek with both Greek and English subtitles, screened through the www.soldouticketbox.com platform.
