Coronavirus: No new deaths recorded on Saturday (updated)

Health authorities announced 107 new coronavirus infections on Saturday from 31,755 tests, a positivity rate of 0.34 per cent, but no new deaths were recorded.

Seventy-seven people were being treated in hospital with 22 in serious or critical condition.

The virus has so far claimed the lives of 229 people, 153 men and 76 women, with the average age being 79.

The number of recorded infections since the pandemic started in March has reached 33,153.

Of the 22 patients in serious or critical condition, 12 were intubated, three were being treated in ICUs without intubation, and seven were in high dependency units.

The health ministry said 23 of the new infections were detected among 261 samples collected from the close contacts of previously confirmed cases. One infection was detected among 94 samples belonging to secondary contacts.

Fifty-seven cases were reported in 29,244 samples tested by antigen tests and four were detected in 290 tests carried out at the Republic’s two airports.

Twelve cases were reported by private laboratories after testing 1,167 samples and six from 206 samples tested by state hospital.

A further four cases were detected in 232 samples tested by antigen tests in private labs.
