Marseille: an ancient port city growing in cultural confidence

In this video, we head over to France’s Marseille for a Covid-free tour of its highlights.

One of Europe’s oldest cities, founded around 600 B.C.E. and known to the ancient Greeks as Massalia and Romans as Massilia, Marseille has been a trading port since ancient times.

And unlike Cannes or St-Tropez, this black sheep of the Provençal coastline offers no glamour, yet has nonetheless bloomed in cultural confidence since its 2013 stint as the European Capital of Culture. What visitors discover if they look beyond its gritty surface, is an earthy, vibrant city, where the attractions of a metropolis meet those of the coast.

Highlights of any Marseille visit should feature:

  1. The Old Port
  2. The 14-stop Hop-on, Hop-off ColourBus
  3. Calanques National Park
  4. Stade Vélodrome
  5. Le Panier
  6. Basilique Notre-Dame de la Garde
  7. Mucem
  8. Palais Longchamp
  9. Cathedrale de la Major
  10. Château d’If

With so much to see and absorb, visitors are sure to warm to this cosmopolitan, creative place.
