Close to 6,500 vaccination slots were snapped up in the first hour of the portal opening on Friday at 7.30am for those aged 53 to 54, the health ministry said.

The vast majority of the reserved slots concerned Pfizer jabs, as Cypriots continued to be wary of AstraZeneca.

According to the ministry, of the 6,425 slots taken up in the first hour, 5,060 were for Pfizer jabs.

The ministry said 15,000 slots were available for the 53-54 age group. The portal will remain open until Saturday at 8pm.

On Thursday, 5,389 appointments were made by people aged 61 to 63, with 3,455 concerning AstraZeneca jabs.

The ministry aims to vaccinate people aged 45 and above with at least one dose of a Covid vaccine by early May and to cover 60 per cent of the population with at least one dose inside the first half of the year.
