A fire which broke out late on Thursday between Plataniskia and Avdimou villages in the Limassol district was contained early on Friday with the help of two helicopters, the fire services said.

Fire fighters arrived at the scene at around 10.30pm on Thursday, with fire engines from Pachna, Monovolikou, the Game and Fauna service and the British Bases, spokesman Andreas Kettis tweeted.

But the limited visibility and location of the fire which started in tough terrain made fire fighting efforts harder, the Cyprus News Agency reported.

The blaze was finally put under control with the help of two helicopters early on Friday that extinguished fronts of the fire that could not be reached from the ground, the spokesman added.

Fire fighting forces will remain in the area throughout the day to completely contain the blaze.

According to the fire service, 150 hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, carob trees and olive trees were destroyed.
