A burglar assaulted a Russian tourist with a knife after breaking and entering into his hotel room in Paphos, police said on Wednesday.

The incident was reported to the police on Tuesday by the 50-year-old Russian man who said that as soon as he entered his hotel room, he saw an unknown man exiting through the window.

The tourist said he followed the suspect and saw that he was meeting two other persons, a man and a woman, who appeared to be his accomplices.

However, the burglars realised they were being followed and one of them assaulted the Russian man with a knife, injuring his thumb.

He was transferred to the accidents and emergency department of the Paphos general hospital where doctors sutured his wound.  He was kept for treatment in the orthopedic ward.

The tourist told the police he did not notice anything missing from his room.

Peyia police and Paphos CID are continuing investigations through assessing CCTV material.
