Guitar and tango sounds at Rialto Theatre

dsc 2672

Two musical events that honour guitar sounds and passionate tango melodies straight from Argentina will wrap up the month at Limassol’s cultural hub. The performances arrive just before June rolls in with its dozens of dance acts at Rialto Theatre.

Coming up on May 27 is the Guitar Project with Dimitris Papangelides sharing the stage with eight friends, all talented musicians and instrumentalists. His concert aims to be a fascinating event where the guitar plays a lead, from classical music to rembetiko songs, accompanied by a cello, two mandolins, a soprano, one more classical guitar and, finally, a jazz trio.

Papangelides and his guests will perform works by Manuel de Falla, Villa Lobos, Claude Bolling and more as the concert pays tribute to the guitar, full of soul and emotions.

Then on May 28 and 29 a spectacular tango and music show will take over Rialto as the island welcomes Mariela Maldonaldo and Pablo Sosa, known as Tango Legends. “Tango,” say organisers, “born in the working-class heart of Buenos Aires, conquered the world with its sensuality, beauty and soul-stirring body language. It transcended cultural boundaries to become a worldwide phenomenon – the whole world moves to tango.”

World-renowned Argentinean choreographers and dancers Mariela Maldonaldo and Pablo Sosa, with some of Argentina’s best dancers and musicians now present an exciting journey, sharing with the audience the charm of Buenos Aires and the magic of music and dance. Their performance also celebrates the memorable work of Astor Piazzolla, the creator of Nuevo Tango, 30 years after his death.

Each dance piece they will present is filled with passion and explosive sensuality accompanied by enthralling music, impressive costumes and great elegance. Tango Legends explore the hot-blooded passion with classical and contemporary interpretations of the inimitable dance.
