Triumph for Cyprus in Birmingham

Akel MP Irene Charalambides was on Wednesday re-elected vice president of the parliamentary assembly of the Organisation of Security and Cooperation in Europe until 2025 with the most preference votes.

The vote took place on the last day of the assembly’s 29^th annual session in Birmingham.

In a tweet, Charalambides spoke of a “triumph for our Cyprus in Birmingham” and added: “The 57 delegations gave me first place among 7 candidates! For our Cyprus, our small country, always on the front line! Support for my person was comprehensive! And I am grateful.”

There were seven candidates for the four posts of vice president. In an announcement, the House of Representatives said the result was a significant success as the vote was taken under difficult conditions for the Cypriot MP, since behind the scenes there were synergies for her not to be elected. It did not elaborate.

There were congratulations from President Nicos Anastasiades for who also on Twitter said he was certain she would continue to carry out her duties and mission with success.

Charalambides, who heads the Cyprus delegation to the assembly, had on Tuesday presented her activities report as special rapporteur on corruption.
