The Employers and Industrialists Federation (Oev) on Tuesday called for measures to prevent fires in and around heavy industrial zones after a fire broke out at Strovolos industrial area the previous day.
The fire in Strovolos was just one of the several incidents reported at industrial areas around the island over the summer. In June, a fire broke out near the Vasiliko industrial zone which sparked protests by the surrounding communities, calling into question the safety of the complex.
“Aside from damaging the environment, fires threaten the lives of working firemen, the public, and put properties at risk of destruction,” a press release said.
“The danger is much higher in heavy industrial areas, where flammable materials are often used and stored”.
Oev’s press release acknowledged the efforts of the fire service to respond to fires and minimise damage, adding however that the fire service needs help from all relevant authorities, and most of all from factory operators.
To prevent the eruption and spread of further fires, the federation called on all companies operating in industrial zones to be prudent about clearing their spaces and their perimetre of any dry grass and debris, implementing proper sewage and waste management, and taking the appropriate fire safety measures and compliance with the prescribed legislation.
Please note that for any change to the license, prior approval must be obtained from the relevant state agencies and local authorities.
“The industry sector contributes to the progress and development of our country and we must protect it by implementing preventive measures and actions to protect against fires,” the statement finally said.
