Police are investigating the death of a three-year-old girl who was found floating unconscious in a hotel swimming pool in Kato Paphos on Sunday.

The child was on holiday with her parents and other family members and they were sitting by the pool. They had reportedly gone to stay in the hotel for the holiday weekend after making the trip from Nicosia.

They had only arrived at the hotel on Sunday for a two-day break, reports said.

According to police, the child had asked her parents if she could go into the children’s pool but was spotted floating unconscious in the adults’ pool by a tourist.

A lifeguard was called but they were unable to revive the little girl. She was rushed to Paphos hospital but doctors were unable to save her.

It is not known how she ended up in the bigger pool. Police are investigating.

Police spent the morning taking statements at Paphos CID from people who were there.

They will also look into what safety protocols were in place at the hotel.

According to state broadcaster Cybc, the hotel has two lifeguards and one of the points of investigation is to establish whether safety measures were followed correctly.

Regulations for the operation of private swimming pools provide for the existence of a “safety supervisor”, with the authority to enforce on all bathers the observance of the rules of safety, hygiene and conduct.

A post mortem on the little girl is expected to be carried out on Tuesday morning.
