Irfan Siddiq said it is an honour for him to be assuming the new role as British high commissioner to Cyprus – in videos posted in English, Greek and Turkish.

Speaking of the island’s diverse history and great culture, Siddiq said that there will be much to learn during his four-year posting – drawing on the wealth of bilateral ties between Cyprus and the UK.

“The UK of course, as a guarantor power and above all as a close friend to all Cypriots, will continue to work for the reunification of Cyprus,” he said.

Siddiq took over the portfolio in August 2022, replacing former commissioner Stephen Lillie.

The father of two has previously been posted to Cairo, Baghdad, Washington, Damascus, Baku and Khartoum.

the British foreign office previously stated that Siddiq spent 2021 in full-time Greek language training.
