Larnaca has been shortlisted as a European Destination of Excellence (Eden) in an EU initiative aimed at rewarding the best achievements in sustainable tourism and green transition practices in smaller destinations across Europe.

Along with Larnaca, Grevena and Trikala in Greece, and Kranj in Slovenia were also shortlisted.

The Eden initiative, implemented by the European Commission, “recognises and rewards smaller destinations that have in place successful strategies to boost sustainable tourism through green transition practices,” a statement released on Friday by the EU said.

“The competition is founded on the principle of promoting the de-velopment of sustainable tourism, which brings value to the economy, the planet, and the people.”

The winner of the competition will be announced in November.
