Fisheries department TV slot highlights danger of overfishing

As part of its ongoing efforts to promote a sustainable management of fish stocks in Cyprus, the department of fisheries on Tuesday released a TV commercial with useful information aimed at protecting fish stocks.

In particular, the commercial, in cooperation with the Press and Information Office (PIO), warns that the stocks of juvenile fish in Cyprus are rapidly decreasing, with serious consequences on the ecosystem and the entire fishing sector.

“One of the measures against overfishing is to set a minimum size for commercial stocks and to prohibit the commercial exploitation of juvenile fish,” the commercial says.

“These measures would give juvenile fish the chance to reproduce at least once, therefore significantly reducing the possibility of stocks decreasing.”
