New exhibition puts spotlight on Instagram

The Limassol concept store Guadaloupe, which sells a curated selection of products by local artists and designers, is hosting an art exhibition this December by Maria Michael Happilou. Titled Instagram, the exhibition is based on an ongoing online project that takes place on the social media platform under the name Tessa Maka (@tessa.maka).

The project consists of sketches depicting a caricature with accentuated feminine features, named Tessa, in different poses, scenes and situations, nodding to Instagram models and influencers. Using humour and camp aesthetics, the project attempts to comment on the prevailing aesthetics of social media while also demonstrating the impossible female beauty standards these platforms impose today.

“Many young women use Instagram ostensibly in defiance of the limits imposed on how they express their sexuality,” says the creator. “At the same time, however, they enforce unattainable beauty standards and objectify themselves for the male gaze.” Instagram will open at Guadaloupe on Saturday at 6pm. The artwork will remain at the concept store until early January for visitors to browse.
