Larnaca residents are getting the short end of the stick when it comes to quality healthcare from the town’s general hospital, according to House Speaker Annita Demetriou.

During a visit to Larnaca general hospital on Thursday, Demetriou said patients do not have the appropriate quality of healthcare and stressed that everyone’s responsibility lay in resolving the problems as soon as possible.

Responding to a journalist’s question about whether she has identified problems beyond the facilities, in the staffing of the hospital’s departments, Demetriou said: “Of course it is one of the issues that we have been informed is valid, especially after the pandemic”.

“I understand that a great deal of effort is being made, but there needs to be a more immediate and effective intervention to meet all these issues that we have before us,” she said.

“It cannot be that the public, or anyone who wants to come to Larnaca general hospital or is referred here, to not have the same equal rights as another hospital. They need fix all that is happening as soon as it can be done and is feasible. With everyone’s cooperation this can be done. I’m not saying that efforts are not being made but more needs to be done,” she added.

“They really do not have the quality level of providing medical care that should and is appropriate and this is precisely where the everyone’s responsibility to resolve them as soon as possible to the extent possible”.

Demetriou noted that lawmakers would also monitor the issue not only for Larnaca hospital, and added that the matter has been registered with the relevant parliamentary committees.

Demetriou said her visit took place “to see exactly the problems that exist, gaps or weaknesses”.

Unfortunately, she continued, the picture was not very good with regard to specific issues and in particular with regard to the operation of the expansion of the hospital’s new wing.

“What is urgent at the moment is to use it adequately, to function properly,” she said, adding that according to the information available, there are several issues outstanding.

“I have been officially informed that they are trying to find a solution but it cannot be that a space that we have been waiting for for so many years as a city and district of Larnaca is not used properly after it has been delivered and has so many problems, which are very obvious as soon as you enter the building,” Demetriou noted.

Regarding the old part of the hospital, she said that it needs to be maintained because it too has several issues and there is also the issue of staffing. Demetriou said that in Larnaca the department that is most understaffed is the emergency department and “this issue should be resolved immediately”.

“I know that not everything can be solved in one day or by magic. Very important efforts are being made and we as the House of Representatives will continue to monitor and wherever we can intervene in our role and institutionally in the way that we are always allowed to, she concluded.
