With the arrival of the New Year, the Larnaca Cinema Society resumes its free film screenings. Three dates in January have been scheduled so far to present independent cinema in French and Arabic. The Municipal Pattihion Theatre will host the screenings, welcoming the island’s film aficionados.

Opening the series for 2023 is the award-winning documentary The Velvet Queen which will be shown on January 9 at 8.30pm. Originally titled La Panthère des Neiges, the film follows two men, an award-winning photographer and a writer, who explore the high-altitude wilderness of Tibet with many cameras, filming wildlife from a respectful distance and searching for the rare snow leopard. Following the screening, a 15-minute discussion will take place.

Then on January 16, the 2022 French-German-Luxembourgish-Norwegian drama More Than Ever (Plus Que Jamais) will be screened. The film made its world premiere at the 75th Cannes Film Festival in May this year and is a touching story about filling life with light, even just before it ends.

Huda’s Salon, which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, will be the next film, to be screened on January 23. The political thriller follows a young mother who is married to a jealous man and goes to Huda’s salon in Bethlehem one day. This ordinary visit turns sour when Huda blackmails the mother to have her work for the secret service of the occupiers, thus betraying her people. Shown in its original Arabic language, Huda’s Salon will include Greek subtitles as well, inviting a wider audience to explore the film.
