Yiannis Ritsou’s The Moonlight Sonata in Cyprus

sonata

“The Moonlight Sonata (1956),” say the organisers of an upcoming event, “the staged monologue of the great poet Yiannis Ritsos, characterises a new era of the poet himself since it is the first of the long compositions of the Fourth Dimension, but also more generally for the poetry.

Composer and conductor of the work Thodoris Lembesis, with his original musical composition, underlines all that the poet wants to present in a staged monologue – a confession of life, hope and anticipation. As such, two evenings of music and poetry are coming up in Larnaca and Limassol.

Actress Panagiota Vlantis narrates the text, and the chamber music orchestra with the participation of two soloists, Christos Zerbinos on the accordion and Dimitris Papangelidis on the classical guitar, render the musical parts of the piece.

This upcoming production has been presented in its first form by All Greece is a Culture in 2021 at the castle of Monemvasia, the place of origin of the poet and at the Ancient Theatre of Dodoni. Moreover, the show did a small tour of cultural sites throughout Greece last year and this January it arrives at the shores of Cyprus.

On January 13 it will be presented at Larnaca’s G.Lycourgos Theatre and on January 14 at Limassol’s Pattihio Municipal Theatre.
