The number of registered unemployed in Cyprus decreased in April 2023, compared to the same month last year, according to a report released this week by the Cyprus Statistical Service (Cystat).

This trend is reflected both in the actual data and in data that has been corrected for seasonal variations.

According to the report, the number of registered unemployed at the end of April 2023 was 11,284 people, compared to 11,664 people in April 2022. This represents a decrease of 380 people, a drop of 3.3 per cent.

Moreover, the decrease in the number of registered unemployed was most significant in the accommodation and catering services sector, which saw a decrease of 292 people.

Trade also saw a decrease of 190 people, while the construction sector saw a decrease of 102 people.

Meanwhile, other sectors that experienced a decrease in registered unemployed include administrative and support activities (88 people) and public administration (47 people).

Furthermore, there was a decrease of 181 people who were new entrants to the labour market.

 

The 13th Nicosia Economic Congress is set to take place on Tuesday, May 9 at the Hilton Nicosia hotel, in the presence of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides.

The opening speech of the Congress will be delivered by President Christodoulides himself.

The president is expected to present his vision of how the country can transform into a model state that will attract investments, promote entrepreneurship, and offer a high quality of life to its citizens.

 

The Cyprus Stock Exchange (CSE) ended Friday, May 5 with losses.

The general Cyprus Stock Market Index was at 106.31 points at 13:44 during the day, reflecting a decrease of 1.33 per cent over the previous day of trading.

The FTSE / CySE 20 Index was at 64.31 points, representing a drop of 1.33 per cent.

The total value of transactions came up to €72,775.

In terms of the sub-indexes, the main, alternative, investment firm and hotel indexes all fell, dropping by 1.72 per cent, 0.5 per cent, 4.54 per cent, and 0.9 per cent respectively.

The biggest investment interest was attracted by the Bank of Cyprus (-0.83 per cent), K+G Complex Public (+1.43 per cent), Demetra (-4.76 per cent), Blue Island (no change), and Pandora (-7.87 per cent).
