Are postcards a thing of the past? For museum educator and founder of the Grapse to (Write it) project Valia Matsentidou handwritten letters and postcards are special and something to be kept alive. As such, several of the educational workshops she holds include the handwritten craft and an upcoming one is dedicated to just that.
The Postcards from Cyprus workshop on the afternoon of May 18 at the Cyprus Museum in Nicosia invites teachers, artists, archaeologists, professionals and non-professionals, specialists and non-specialists – everyone from the adult audience – to take part in an original experiential workshop. Through a two-hour afternoon session, from 5.30pm, participants will have the opportunity to interact with selected exhibits from the In the Same Place exhibition that is currently on, while also interacting with each other and with the exhibition creator Katerina Attalidou, reviving the handwritten way of communication, through the postcards issued by the Department of Antiquities especially for the exhibition.
The free workshop in Greek, which is part of this year’s International Museum Day 2023 theme, focuses on the visitor, who is invited to slow down and study the museum exhibits. At the same time, it gives voice to the visitor within a safe, supportive and welcoming museum environment, which promotes and facilitates reflection, communication, slowing down, self-awareness and empathy, with the ultimate goal of individual and collective well-being. Pencils out, paper down, thoughts released.
