Health minister emphasises Covid vaccine efficacy

Υπουργός Υγείας – Παγκόσμια Ημέρα
Health Minister Popi Kanari

Health Minister Popi Kanari on Friday stressed “the protective efficacy of the Covid-19 vaccine”, adding that the symptoms for vaccinated individuals who contract the coronavirus are significantly milder.

Following her visit to the Nicosia General Hospital, Kanari said the health ministry is not overly concerned about the low vaccination coverage among the elderly but added that additional measures to combat the surge in Covid-19 infections are being prepared.

At present, 75 people, mostly elderly, are being treated in public hospitals for Covid-19.

“Many elderly individuals refuse vaccination because their relatives are hesitant,” Kanari explained, mentioning that mobile units have been dispatched to nursing homes for vaccinations.

She also said that masks and tests for both staff and visitors are being distributed for free at nursing homes, assuring a continued effort in vaccination.

Kanari also warned that a potential increase in coronavirus cases is foreseeable in the future.

“The public must be convinced that the vaccine offers protection. While one might contract Covid-19, the symptoms will be much milder post-vaccination,” she said.
