Whilst trying to watch the annual Perseids meteor shower (originating from the Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle) this week, my view was interrupted and spoilt every night until the early hours of the morning by two huge beams of white light projected into the night sky and constantly moving from north to south over Neo Chorio. The source of the lights appeared to be near the western end of Latsi harbour from where pulsating noises could also be heard.

The sky at night provides quite sufficient illumination from its billions of celestial bodies and this totally unnecessary light pollution is, I am sure, neither welcomed, nor appreciated by most local residents and visitors, who would much rather enjoy the natural beauty of the heavens – which is getting more and more difficult to enjoy due to light pollution around the world.
