Cyprus, Greece, and Malta have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) aimed at strengthening cooperation in agriculture, with a focus on promoting innovation, sustainability, and resilience in the sector.

The agreement was signed on Monday during the Agriculture and Fisheries Council in Brussels by Agriculture Minister Maria Panayiotou and her Greek and Maltese counterparts Konstantinos Tsiaras and Anton Refalo.

Panayiotou explained that the MoU focuses on the exchange of knowledge and best practices, with an emphasis on supporting young farmers and promoting female employment in the agricultural sector.

The agreement marks a significant step in reinforcing agricultural ties between the three countries, highlighting mutual benefits and shared goals for sustainable farming. The collaboration will include joint initiatives to develop sustainable practices and improve productivity, with a focus on areas such as soil quality improvement, water management, carbon capture techniques and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The MoU also promotes alternative and sustainable farming methods, such as hydroponics and aquaculture, which are especially important in addressing water scarcity and drought challenges faced by all three nations. Additionally, it aims to facilitate access to education and training in agriculture.

“The MoU signed today establishes the foundation for formal cooperation and mutual support between Cyprus, Greece and Malta, providing practical solutions to current issues in the agricultural sector and creating opportunities to boost innovation, sustainability, and resilience,” Panayiotou concluded.
