The fire which broke out near the village of Droushia on Monday was under complete control by 7pm, the forestry department said.

Earlier, Droushia mukhtar Sotiris Kouparis said it had been on the wane by early Monday evening.

Kouparis also confirmed that the fire had burned a gazebo and a warehouse near the village of Inia, having earlier burnt a “large area of wild vegetation”. The warehouse, he said, contained mattresses.

The fire had started shortly after 1pm near Droushia and the neighbouring village of Pittokopos, before spreading towards Inia later in the day.

Firefighting forces from the forestry department and the fire brigade were mobilised, with reinforcements being sent in the afternoon.

The ‘Icarus’ plan was activated, deploying nine aircraft and one coordinating helicopter from the National Guard.

Inia mukhtar Yangos Tsivikos said earlier in the day that the fire was raging out of control and has spread quickly due to strong winds, reaching the military camp near Inia. He confirmed that the camp has been evacuated/

Earlier, two fire engines from the Paphos and Polis Chrysochous fire stations responded to the fire, which, according to forestry department spokesperson George Constantinou, involved large rubbish heaps near Droushia, as well as the villages of Arodes and Inia.

The fire was initially put under control, but, due to a rekindling of the blaze near the village of Androlikou, the nearby army camp outside Inia was evacuated.

Elsewhere, another fire that had broken out south of the village of Lania in the Limassol district has been brought under control, after the ‘Icarus’ plan was activated to assist in firefighting efforts.

Fire brigade spokesperson Andreas Kettis posted on X that the fire is now “under perimeter control with no active front”, though small flare-ups within the burned area are being dealt with.

Kettis said the fire burned approximately 20 hectares of dry grass, wild vegetation, and coniferous trees.

“Regarding aerial resources, only a pair of firefighting aircraft remain in the area,” he added. The Civil Defence also contributed six firefighting units and 15 officers to the operation.

Earlier, Kettis reported that the fire had broken out south of Lania, affecting the areas near Lania, Monagri, and Limnatis.

He mentioned that a total of four fire engines from the fire brigade had been deployed, along with two water tankers and one earthmover from the Limassol district government.

Additionally, two fire engines from the Nicosia-based volunteer group SupportCy, and two more from the Kitasweather volunteer group, also responded to the fire.

Kettis added that the forestry department had contributed 12 fire engines and two earthmovers, with the ‘Icarus’ plan deploying a total of six aerial firefighting units and a National Guard helicopter for coordination.
