Police in Larnaca said on Monday they had arrested a minor while a second is wanted after a fracas at the Finikoudes tourist area over the weekend.
The Larnaca Municipality, meanwhile, said it was intensely displeased with the repeat incident which occurred despite measures taken, referring to episodes of property damage at a home for the elderly last month.
“Unfortunately the measures determined [previously] did not prove effective and the same incidents unfolded,” it said.
The municipality recalled that it had requested a meeting with the minister of justice, chief of police, and the deputy minister of migration over the problem.
“We emphasise that these are isolated incidents perpetrated by a small group of known-to-police individuals,” the municipality said.
The arrested minor, aged 17, was caught on Sunday evening at Finikoudes beach, for an investigated case of conspiracy to commit a misdemeanour, breach of the peace, and malicious damage.
The offences were committed in Larnaca on Saturday evening. For the same case, an arrest warrant has been issued against a second minor who is wanted.
Police reported they received the information around 9.40pm on Saturday night that a fight between young Syrians and other foreigners had broken out in the area.
Police patrols arrived at the scene but those involved had already fled.
Information revealed that around ten Syrian youths had become involved in an altercation with five identified foreigners of another nationality, possibly tourists, who were dining at a restaurant.
CCTV from the premises led to testimony against one minor, aged 17, for whom a warrant was issued.
Police located and arrested him at around 8:30pm on Sunday evening in the same area, and took him to Larnaca CID offices, where he was questioned in writing and gave some allegations, which are also being investigated.
No injuries ensued from the fight, police reported, while chairs and the table of an adjacent restaurant were damaged.
Last month a fight in the same area of Larnaca led to one teen being hospitalised.
