Cypriot residents spent a total of €2.23 billion on travel both within Cyprus and abroad in 2023, according to a report by the Cyprus Statistical Service.

In addition, a total of 484,365 residents made at least one trip involving an overnight stay, reflecting an 8.4 per cent increase from 2022.

The data shows that while domestic travel declined by 7.4 per cent—from 1.69 million trips in 2022 to 1.56 million in 2023—the number of trips abroad soared.

Cypriots made 1.67 million overseas trips in 2023, marking a 35.6 per cent increase compared to 1.23 million trips in 2022.

Of these international journeys, 85.7 per cent were for personal reasons, while 14.3 per cent were for business.

Moreover, approximately 70 per cent of travellers abroad stayed in rented accommodation, with 30 per cent opting for non-rented options like family homes.

For travel within Cyprus, residents spent €292.9 million, up by 9.9 per cent from the previous year.

Dining out in restaurants and cafes constituted the largest share of domestic travel expenses (40.1 per cent), followed by accommodation (35.4 per cent), transportation (10.1 per cent), and miscellaneous expenses (14.4 per cent).

Expenditures on international travel, meanwhile, reached €1.94 billion—a 39.1 per cent increase from 2022.

Furthermore, transport expenses accounted for the largest share of international travel costs (35.7 per cent), followed by accommodation (24 per cent), food and beverages in restaurants and cafes (23.1 per cent), and other expenses (17.2 per cent).

Finally, the statistical service explained that travel figures refer to the total number of trips rather than the number of individual travellers, meaning that a single resident may account for multiple trips over the period.
