Titled Art in Democracy, an upcoming exhibition organised by the European Parliament will soon be unveiled in Nicosia. Its opening event on Monday at the old Nicosia Town Hall in Eleftheria Square, will be inaugurated by President Nikos Christodoulides.
After travelling from Brussels and Strasbourg, the exhibition will now land in the Cyprus capital where it will be on display until January 29, supported by Nicosia 2030. The exhibition showcases “the struggle for democratic values through the eyes of contemporary European artists”.
Soon to be displayed in Nicosia as well, are artworks from the European Parliament’s Contemporary Art Collection which has been active since 1980, launched by Simone Veil, the first President of the directly elected European Parliament. There are over 500 artworks in the collection that reflect Europe’s motto ‘United in Diversity’. Every year, the collection grows, serving as a part of Europe’s cultural heritage and identity.
A selection of pieces will be included in the Nicosia exhibition, divided into seven thematic sections that approach the topic of ‘democracy’ from different angles. The artworks respond to questions such as What is democracy? Why was the European Union founded on it? and What are Europe’s democratic values?
The exhibition will remain on display throughout the Christmas period, inviting viewers to study the artworks and question democracy in their own lives and societies, sparking dialogue and encouraging active citizenship.
