The two young men injured in the fatal car crash in Frenaros over the weekend are recovering in hospital, while the other three who were killed will be buried later on Tuesday at the expense of the Paralimni-Dherynia municipality.

The two, aged 18 and 20, were passengers in the accident which led to the death of three others: Martinos Martis, Irenaios Adamos, both aged 20, and Nikolas Koutsos, 18.

Cyprus News Agency sources said the 18-year-old, who is being treated at Famagusta general hospital, is stable and out of danger.

The condition of the 22-year-old being treated at Nicosia general hospital is serious but stable.

Autopsies indicated that the cause of death of the three young men was multiple injuries sustained during the accident.

Police traffic senior officer Charis Evripidou told CyBC radio that the authorities had gathered evidence to help piece together the cause of the accident and that they believed the main cause was speeding.

Evripidou said the results of investigations into the cause of the accident will be announced once finalised.

The 44-year-old who was involved in the accident and had been arrested was released without being charged in writing.

His alcotest and narcotest indications were zero.

Blood samples have been taken from the 18-year-old driver.

Famagusta traffic police in cooperation with the police headquarters’ traffic department began new investigations on Monday and reconstructed the scene.

Preliminary findings indicated that the 18-year-old driver and 20-year-old front-seat passenger, who died in the accident, were both wearing seatbelts. It was not clear whether the backseat passengers were also wearing seatbelts.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by Famagusta police.

The funerals of the three victims will take place at 2pm on Tuesday in their home community of Frenaros, paid for by local authorities.

A funeral service will be held at the Holy Church of Archangel Michael in Frenaros and the burial will take place at the municipal cemetery, it was announced, while the Paralimni-Dheryneia municipality declared a three-day mourning period.

The wishes of the families are for all the young people and friends of the deceased to wear white T-shirts. The families will not receive condolences,” the community said.

Another 20-year-old, Eirini Kontogiorgou, died in Engomi in Nicosia, also on Sunday, around 3am, while riding as a passenger in a small rental vehicle driven by a 20-year-old, with seven young people in total on board.

The 20-year-old driver was arrested as per a court warrant and held for questioning. The young man had been given an alcotest which registered a 55μg instead of the 9μg allowed for novice drivers.
