China has reaffirmed its principled stance “for a just and sustainable solution” to the Cyprus issue based on UN Security Council resolutions.
The affirmation was made by Wang Aiwen, member of the permanent committee of the Central Disciplinary Control Service and Deputy Secretary of the Labour Committee of the State Organisation of the Chinese Communist Party.
Wang on Monday met with the chairman and members of the House foreign affairs committee Harris Georgiades, Marina Nicolaou and Alexandra Atttalides, accompanied by China’s ambassador in Cyprus, Liu Yantao.
Both sides underlined the excellent bilateral relations between Cyprus and China and noted the opportunities for further growth, a news release from parliament said.
The MPs thanked China, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, for its efforts towards a settlement of the Cyprus issue and reaffirmed that Cyprus stands for ‘One Cyprus – One China’.
Georgiades also highlighted Cyprus’ role as a pillar of security and stability in the Eastern Mediterranean, referring to Turkey’s destabilising role, along with its intransigent position as regards the Cyprus issue.
Wang spoke about the significant contribution of the strategic partnership between China and Cyprus for the promotion of bilateral political and trade relations.
He also spoke of the cooperation of the people of the two countries, within the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative. Wang also mentioned that Cyprus has a constructive role in EU-China relations.
It was noted during the meeting that ties had been reaffirmed during the recent visit of the House president and a cross-party delegation to China.
The scope for further development of relations in all areas was discussed.
There was also an exchange of views on issues of mutual interest, including commercial relations between the two countries and on climate change.
