The construction of a windfall farm in Larnaca violates environmental protection conditions, two NGOs charged on Tuesday.

In a joint statement BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria described the construction at Larnaca’s state forest Kellia as one that violates conditions aimed at protecting protected bird species.

They called for an immediate termination of the works, and the restoration of the area.

There has been “serious degradation and alteration of the landscape” and an impact on the habitats for bird species on the site designated as a special protection area for birds.

They charged the site itself is in an environmentally protected Natura 2000 site and conditions aimed at limiting the impact of the works to the environment have also been violated.

“Despite reports from BirdLife Cyprus and Terra Cypria and fines from the forestry department and game fund in the past few months, construction works continue to date, violating the environmental approval and planning permit.

The NGOs said the fact that construction work continues “in breach of the legally binding conditions of the environmental approval and the planning permit constitutes both a demonstration of systematic non-compliance by the developer and a demonstration of systematic tolerance by the relevant authorities.”

They called for the environmental approval and planning permit to be revoked, and all construction work on the site to be terminated.

All construction materials should be dismantled and removed, they added.
