A total of 114 people have been helped this year at the Tolmi drug rehabilitation centre in Paphos, its chairwoman said on Friday.
It said drug and alcohol abuse in Paphos is serious and multidimensional, reflecting an increasingly European lifestyle.
“The presence of this lifestyle type highlights the need for targeted prevention and treatment interventions aimed at specific age groups, for education and awareness-raising,” chairwoman Annita Taliotou said.
She said the annual results of the national authority for addictions for 2023 and the wastewater analysis for 2021 show that drug use in Paphos has reached concerning levels.
Cannabis is the most widespread substance used, while quantities of methamphetamine, cocaine, amphetamines and other stimulants were also detected in wastewater, showing their frequent use in the area.
“The age analysis shows that people aged 15-34 are more prone to substance use, especially regarding stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines,” Taliotou added.
There are currently 52 people being treated at the centre.
