Police on Monday said there were assessing whether the death of 62-year-old Vitaly Shostak in Limassol was a premeditated murder or suicide.

Shostak was found to have died from a single knife injury to the chest on Friday night. Police initially suspected his 63-year-old wife, though reports say she maintains he took his own life.

The wife is currently serving an eight-day remand and according to Limassol CID chief Lefteris Kyriacou, police are waiting on the autopsy report and forensic evidence results.

“We hope that along with other statements we received, the evidence we gathered and continue to collect, we can get to the bottom of this case and decipher the suspect’s role.”

Shostak’s son has also given a statement to police which is currently under scrutiny. Police are also assessing whether the couple was drunk prior to the incident.
