A police officer and a lawyer were arrested on Tuesday morning for aiding the escape of the Swedish fugitive that had been held under police custody at a Larnaca hospital.
A police bulletin on Tuesday said the two suspects were arrested early in the morning at their Larnaca homes for offences concerning aiding a prisoner’s escape, conspiracy to commit a felony, and exchanges that reveal corruption and abuse of power.
The two are expected to appear before Larnaca district court for a remand order.
So far, two members of the police force have been suspended amid an ongoing investigation as to what happened. The police chief has been reportedly furious over the incident, particularly after it emerged a contract worker was assigned to guard the fugitive.
The contractor however belonged to a group of hires aimed at dealing with migration flows.
Swedish national Hans Jonny Uven, aged 49 was arrested upon arrival to Cyprus on December 6 on a European arrest warrant, and taken to a private clinic in Larnaca.
He was wanted for financial crime charges amounting to some €90 million.
Uven was guarded at the clinic where he was being treated for gastroenteritis and chest pains.
He managed to escape on December 22, prompting a manhunt. He was eventually found a day later on the 5th floor of a building under construction in the centre of Larnaca.
