The lawyer and police officer arrested earlier this week in connection with the Swedish fugitive who escaped police custody were hatching his escape plan, it was reported on Friday.

Swedish Hans Jonny Uven, 49 had escaped police custody in late December after managing to give officers the slip while he was being treated at a private hospital in Larnaca. He had initially been arrested on December 6 at Larnaca airport on a European arrest warrant.

His 54-year-old lawyer and a 44-year-old police officer were arrested on Tuesday for aiding and abetting the escape.

The lawyer seems to have smuggled a mobile phone, chargers and training shoes to Uven at the clinic, while contradictory statements to police had been made about a flirtation and a marriage proposal between them, Phileleftheros reported.

The lawyer allegedly also provided Uven with a map and a meeting point, as well as a key to unlock his handcuffs.

Police later found 4,000 photos on the mobile, most depicting Uven alone in his clinic room between December 12 and 13. Officers had seized the phone from him during his eventual re-arrest at an abandoned building in Larnaca on December 23, the day following his escape.

The photos showcase how much time he had been left unguarded, in disregard of police protocols.

Uven, also being held in police custody, reportedly confessed he had been expecting to be picked up by a black car but instead found only a sports bag at the specified location and waited in vain for hours until it started to rain.

He then took shelter in the abandoned building where the police subsequently found him.

The CID is delving into the nature of the relationship between Uven and his lawyer, who told police the Swede flirted with her and proposed marriage. While at the clinic, Uven is known to have transferred a luxury car worth over €100,000 to her from a dealer in Limassol, as well as a sum of €5,000.

According to Uven, the lawyer extorted the goods from him under pressure and she had suggested the marriage which he rejected. She also threatened him with consequences from high-ranking acquaintances.

According to Uven, the 44-year-old police officer had approached him after his arrest and proposed the particular lawyer to take his case. According to the Swede, the officer had also asked in exchange for the suspect to purchase a house from him.

Police swept the officer’s house in Kiti seizing four mobile phones, while he was found in possession of 42 cartridges despite being legally limited to 25. He is thus also being investigated for illegal possession of explosives.

The officer allegedly put money on the Swede’s phone card, while its empty packaging was discovered at the lawyer’s house, and he is also currently pegged as the buyer of the trainers, worth €500.

The officer allegedly requested sick leave on the day before Uven’s escape and had been absent from duty until his arrest on December 31.

Police meanwhile are in the process of taking statements from 60 individuals. The case has been widely publicised in Sweden where Uven had been initially wanted for a €90 million financial fraud case.
