Nathan Fillion has long been a favourite of mine, so when I first heard about The Rookie, I knew I had to give it a try. And it doesn’t disappoint!

The show centres on John Nolan (Fillion), a forty-something who decides to become the oldest rookie in the LAPD. It’s a classic underdog tale – one that’s inspiring, funny and surprisingly relatable, even here in Cyprus.

What really draws me to The Rookie is how it combines the usual police procedural elements with deeper emotional layers. Nolan’s decision to restart his life after a divorce and career burnout speaks to anyone who’s ever felt the need for a fresh start.

And let’s be honest, in Cyprus, where so many of us face job challenges or personal crossroads, that message hits home. Whether you’re navigating a career change or simply trying to stay afloat in a competitive market, Nolan’s perseverance reminds us that it’s never too late to take on new challenges.

But The Rookie isn’t all seriousness. Fillion’s natural charm shines through in every episode, bringing moments of levity to an otherwise high-stakes environment. The action is solid, the ensemble cast works well together, and there’s just enough humour to keep the tone light, without diminishing the seriousness of the job.

And for those of us in Cyprus – where community and relationships are so vital – it’s refreshing to see how the show balances Nolan’s personal struggles with his growing bonds at the precinct.

The police work in The Rookie is gritty and real, capturing the intense pressure, long hours, and difficult conditions that officers face. The show highlights the sense of duty and the relentless drive to protect the community, and while the LAPD may have its own unique challenges, the obstacles that come with law enforcement are something that officers everywhere can relate to.

Overall, The Rookie offers more than just cop drama. It’s a story about second chances and finding yourself in a new role – no matter your age. If you need a bit of inspiration with a side of action and humour, this is the show for you.
