In a move aimed at addressing challenges faced by the media sector, President Nikos Christodoulides, announced an initiative for dialogue with all involved stakeholders to find solutions to the sector’s pressing issues.

Speaking at a New Year reception held at the Presidential Palace for journalists and technical staff from the media, President Christodoulides expressed gratitude for the strong turnout.

“There is nearly the entire cabinet and other state officials who are present here today. I would like to wish everyone a happy new year and encourage you to continue your determined and essential work,” he said.

Highlighting the critical role of media workers in upholding democracy, he emphasised that both the media and its workforce are fundamental pillars in any democratic country.

“The media should be strong, as should all of you who serve it, whether as journalists or other employees,” he added.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by the media, particularly those related to rapid technological advancements, Christodoulides announced a new initiative to tackle these issues.

“With absolute respect for the independence of the media, the government will collaborate with the Cyprus Journalists’ Association, the Publishers’ Association, and other relevant bodies involved with the media, whether owners or workers, to establish a framework for discussion,” he said.

The president stressed that the goal of this initiative is to safeguard democracy in Cyprus, which, he argued, requires a robust media landscape.

“The protection of democracy in our country depends on strong journalism,” he stated, underscoring the importance of not only print media but also electronic and broadcast outlets.

Christodoulides further assured that the first meeting of the initiative would be held at the presidential level to set the stage for ongoing dialogue and problem-solving.

Before concluding his remarks, the president extended his good-wishes to all, their families, and loved ones, and expressed his commitment to continued cooperation with the media. Despite the criticism that occasionally arises within the framework of democracy, he welcomed it as an essential part of the media’s role.

The event concluded with Christodoulides cutting the traditional vasilopita and engaging in conversations with numerous media representatives.
