Elam on Friday took issue with the wording on the ministry of education’s recently launched online registration platform eDea.

The party voiced objections to the option of virtually registering a parent, without the need for a physical document check, as well as use of the terms “Parent 1” and “Parent 2”, among other complaints.

“We express strong concern about the unacceptable actions of the education minister …  On the platform there is a choice of virtual parent [registration] which allows immigrants to register in the system with false or random information, without possessing the required documents,” Elam said.

The party claimed there have been incidents of irregular migrants managing to register their children on the platform with Turkish documents, without appropriate checks being carried out.

“While digital modernisation is necessary, implementing initiatives without the necessary checks creates serious risks,” it added.

The party went on to demand the disabling of the virtual parent registration option.

The party also took issue with the ministry’s gender-neutral word choice, saying that on instructions from Education Minister Athena Michaelidou, “the platform fully adopts the woke agenda”, using the term “Parent 1” and “Parent 2” as opposed “mother” and “father”.

“Does the ministry of education understand the seriousness of the institution of the family within Cypriot society? Have they asked parents if they accept being called parent 1 and parent 2? Such actions are unacceptable and we condemn them,” Elam said.

The party also criticised a question that asks parents if they consent for their child to participate in the subject of Greek Orthodox religious studies.

We inform you that Cyprus is a Greek Orthodox Christian country, and in all Greek-speaking schools, religious studies should not be optional or by choice. It is our duty to ensure the teaching of these subjects as mandatory, preserving our national and religious identity,” it said.
