In 2023, 16.9 per cent of Cypriots reported difficulties in heating their homes, according to Eurostat. This marks a 2.3 per cent improvement compared to 2022, when one in five Cypriots struggled to keep their homes warm.
Across the European Union, the situation has worsened, with an average of 10.6 per cent of the population facing heating challenges in 2023, up by 1.3 per cent from the previous year.
Portugal and Spain recorded the highest share of residents struggling to heat their homes, with 20.8 per cent, followed closely by Bulgaria at 20.7 per cent, Lithuania at 20 per cent, and Greece at 19.2 per cent. On the other end of the spectrum, the lowest shares were observed in Luxembourg (2.1 per cent), Finland (2.6 per cent), Slovenia (3.6 per cent), Austria (3.9 per cent), and Estonia (4.1 per cent). Cyprus ranked sixth among EU countries with the highest percentage of residents unable to maintain adequate heating in their homes.
In addition, December 2023 Eurostat data revealed that Cypriots were among the EU’s lowest spenders on home energy upgrades. Only 14.6 per cent of the population reported living in properties that had undergone energy improvements in the past five years.
