The Holy Synod of the church of Cyprus has urged the Metropolitan of Paphos to take a clear stance on controversial publications linked to his Metropolis. The statement followed the Synod’s first regular session of the year, held today under the chairmanship of Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus.
In an official statement, the Synod acknowledged concerns over letters received regarding the Metropolitan’s actions. The publications in question, issued by individuals close to him, including a Metropolis employee and a priest he ordained, reportedly contain allegations against the archbishop.
The Synod emphasised the importance of adhering to the church of Cyprus’ statute. If the Metropolitan of Paphos does not align with the views expressed in these publications, he has been urged to instruct their removal.
During the session, the Synod also paid tribute to the late Archbishop Anastasios of Tirana, Durres, and All Albania. It recognised his extensive contributions and expressed hope that he would be honoured among the righteous.
Additionally, the Holy Synod reviewed its participation in inter-Christian dialogues and discussed related decisions. A significant resolution included the approval of an annual fundraiser for the holy monastery of Saint Catherine of Theovadistos Mount Sinai. The collection will take place in all churches in Cyprus on the Sunday closest to Saint Catherine’s feast day.
The Synod also announced an extension of the period allowing marriages during the Christmas fasting season. As with the previous year, weddings will be permitted up to December 12.
Looking ahead, the Synod confirmed plans to host a conference marking the 1700th anniversary of the first ecumenical council. The event will explore the council’s decisions, with details on the topic and date to be released later.
The Synod’s decisions reflect its commitment to unity, tradition, and ongoing dialogue within the orthodox church.
