A 36-year-old Egyptian man was sentenced to 18 months and one week imprisonment in Dhekelia on January 29 after being found guilty of grievous bodily harm, it was announced on Monday.

The man was arrested on September 11, 2024 and remained in custody until the trial for seriously injuring a male colleague following an argument while working at a construction site in Asomatos within the British bases.

The victim, from Syria, suffered slash and stab wounds to the neck, abdominal area and arms and was kept in Limassol hospital for a week after undergoing surgery, the bases said.

This was treated as a serious incident where a detailed investigation was carried out and a desirable outcome was met,” WSBA divisional commander chief superintendent Martyn Ball said.

He added that “violence is a global concern and this outcome displays the SBA police’s dedication and commitment towards detecting such crimes and bringing such offenders before justice.”
