Cyprus has made significant progress in the 2024 Corruption Perception Index, climbing both in score and global position, the Cyprus Integrity Forum said on Tuesday.

The Corruption Perception Index ranks countries based on perceptions of public sector corruption, as evaluated by experts and business executives.

Those in Cyprus saw a notable improvement, with the island’s score rising by three points from 53 in 2023 to 56 in 2024. This also led to a jump in its global ranking by three places.

This marks the second consecutive year Cyprus has improved its position. In 2023, the country had increased its score by one point, from 52 to 53.

With this accelerated progress, Cyprus now sits in 46th place out of 180 countries, just a step away from entering the top quarter of the most transparent jurisdictions in the world.

The Cyprus Integrity Forum has praised the country’s continued improvement over the past two years, seeing it as a clear indication of the effectiveness of anti-corruption measures taken and growing public awareness of transparency issues.

However, the forum also cautioned against complacency. “We must all remain committed to the fight against corruption, promoting ethics and transparency in all sectors of society and business to gradually elevate Cyprus to the position it deserves,” it said.

As a leading anti-corruption non-governmental organisation in Cyprus, the forum also stressed its commitment to monitoring these rankings closely. It vowed to take further steps to raise awareness of the damaging effects of corruption.

Late last year President Nikos Christodoulides said the island could become a ‘model country’ for combatting corruption.
