Budget airline Wizz Air on Friday announced that it has exceeded 9 million passengers travelling to and from Larnaca international airport.
The announcement of the milestone comes as the airline recently introduced two new routes to Cairo and Milan.
In a statement, the company said that “the milestone of 9 million passengers underscores Wizz Air’s continued commitment to offering affordable and high-quality travel experiences while strengthening its presence in the region”.
Moreover, as part of its strategy to increase growth, the airline recently launched flights from Larnaca to Cairo and Milan, “further improving connectivity for travellers”.
To celebrate this achievement, Wizz Air rewarded its 9 millionth passenger with a special travel voucher and surprised passengers on the Budapest to Larnaca flight with festive treats.
“Reaching 9 million passengers at Larnaca international airport is an incredible milestone for us,” said Olivia Harangozo, Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air.
“This success reflects the trust and loyalty of our passengers, who continue to choose Wizz Air for their travel needs,” she added.
According to the airline’s announcement, “Wizz Air first began operations in Cyprus in 2010 as an inbound carrier”.
“Building on its strong partnership with Hermes Airports, it established a base in Larnaca in 2020 with two aircraft,” it added.
The company further mentioned that “since then, the company has tripled its capacity, making it the largest airline in Larnaca with a 18 per cent market share and a key player in Cyprus’ aviation sector”.
Maria Kouroupi, Director of Aviation Development, Marketing and Communications at Hermes Airports, also spoke about the importance of this partnership.
“Our collaboration with Wizz Air continues to grow, supporting our strategic goal of enhancing Cyprus’ air connectivity with year-round flights,” Kouroupi said.
“This promotes sustainable tourism while providing residents and visitors with a wide range of travel options,” she added.
“The milestone of 9 million passengers,” she continued, “highlights the significance of our long-term and successful partnership with Wizz Air.”
“We look forward to expanding it further, strengthening connectivity, the economy, and tourism in Cyprus,” Kouroupi concluded.
