Police in Paphos arrested a 55-year-old man on Thursday, for an investigated case involving a large stash of cannabis which had been buried underground.

The 55-year-old appeare before court on Thursday and was handed an eight-day remand order.

Officers from the drug squad intercepted the suspect while driving on Wednesday afternoon, when he was found in possession of 1kg of cannabis.

The man had been sighted earlier in the day digging in a field in the village of Panayia, and unearthing the same container in which the cannabis found in his vehicle was kept.

Subsequently officers searched the spot and discovered a water tank containing an additional 37kg of the drug.
