Four individuals suspected of involvement in the brutal murder of 16 donkeys in Karpasia on 16 February will remain in custody for an additional five days, it was reported on Friday.
The suspects were brought before the district court of Trikomo on Tuesday morning. Following a request by the “police” for more time to gather further evidence and witness statements, the court ruled to extend their detention. Initially, the “police” had asked for a full seven days, but this was contested by the defence lawyers representing the suspects. After considering the objection, the court agreed to the five-day extension.
The tragic incident, which has shocked both the local community and animal rights groups, involved the violent deaths of the donkeys, whose bodies were discovered in a remote area of Karpasia. Authorities have yet to reveal the full details of their investigation, but the nature of the killings has raised serious concerns about the individuals behind the attack.
As the investigation continues, the local community remains on edge, with many questioning what could have driven someone to commit such a cruel act.
Animal welfare advocates are calling for swift justice and stronger protections for animals in the region, as the case gains attention beyond the Turkish-controlled areas of Cyprus.
The suspects will remain in custody for the next five days, while investigators continue their efforts to uncover further information.
