Despite an international drop in news media publishing April Fools news stories – likely to be due to fake news concerns – in Cyprus news sites did not disappoint on Tuesday.
As usual, some were more creative and convincing than others.
Philenews published a story about American spies dressed as tourists in Cyprus, who are headquartered at the British bases.
The ‘information’ came from British journalist Matt Kennard who reportedly deals with research and security issues and works for well-known English-language media outlets.
The story is allegedly backed up and based on secret documents revealed by former agent of the US National Security Agency and whistleblower Edward Snowden.
Meanwhile, Politis’ story saw President Nikos Christodoulides renouncing his pension and donating the money to university students in need, via a fundraiser owned by his wife.
Ministers, MPs and commissioners, it said, would have to follow the example of the president.
Kathimerini posted a story that Cyprus would become America’s 51st state after Canada refused to.
The story was backed up by the idea of America expanding its borders. “Faced with the need for expansion, the U.S. pivoted to the Mediterranean, where Cyprus eagerly stepped up,” Kathimerini said.
The story continued by referring to Cyprus as America Junior and the Mediterranean Sea as the American sea, while it said that the Cyprus president would fly to the US to meet Trump and finalise the historic agreement over a symbolic meal of burger and fries.
Sigmalive, meanwhile posted that online shop Shein will open a pop-up store in Nicosia.
It said that Shein would add Cyprus to its pop-up stores roster, with it due to appear in June 2026.
Last but not least, Turkish Cypriot publication Kibris said that aliens were spotted in Cyprus, more specifically in front of the Near East University’s Faculty of Communications.
