The opening of a Turkish port to commercial ships under the Cyprus flag has been proposed to Ankara, according to a report in Greek newspaper TA NEA on Saturday.
“From the Cypriot side, there is also a reservation as to whether Turkey really intends to proceed to the end on the basis of the Christodoulides proposal,” TA NEA wrote, adding that Nicosia was ready to proceed if Turkey was willing to.
The report claimed that a source in the Cypriot government had shared information about Nicosia preparing to make concessions on the issue of EU entry visas for Turkish nationals, which would reportedly apply only to Turkish businesspeople.
TA NEA wrote that President Nikos Christodoulides had personally submitted a proposal to the Turkish leadership to open a port for the approximately 1,100 ships under the Cyprus flag, which would lift the Turkish embargo imposed in 1987.
