A forest fire near a military shooting range in Sia, Nicosia, believed to have been caused by a rogue projectile, burned five acres of pine trees and bushes on Tuesday.

The fire was reported at 11am and was brought under control at 11.50am by the coordinated efforts of 36 forestry department firefighters with nine fire engines and an earth shifter.

“At first glance, it appears that the fire was caused by a rogue projectile during a National Guard firing session,” the forestry department said.

Meanwhile, a fire that broke out on Tuesday morning in Mandria, Limassol, was put out soon after.

The fire was reported at 7.55am. Two fire engines with a combined crew of seven firefighters managed to bring the fire under control by 8.10am.

Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
