Stalled roadworks in Akamas national park are under scrutiny by the auditor-general, who is preparing a report following a site visit to assess two years of stagnation.

Auditor-general Andreas Papaconstantinou visited the area on April 25 to gather information and evidence. His report is expected within three months, provided no additional elements arise that require further examination.

The purpose of the on-site inspection was to determine whether the legally binding conditions of the special ecological assessment had been followed during the project and to investigate any possible misuse of public funds.

Papaconstantinou appears committed to a thorough investigation, following complaints from environmental organisations (Terra Cypria, BirdLife, Opok) whose representatives he met on April 25.

A day earlier, on April 24, he held separate meetings with departments of the agriculture ministry, which had requested a private briefing.

The investigation is focusing on several aspects of the stalled project: plumbing works in Avakas, parapets along the road, bridges in Toxeftra, excavations on the road surface, the impact of rainwater runoff from residential developments in Peyia and the construction of the road leading to the entrance of the national park at Aspros Potamos.

Audit Office spokeswoman Yiota Michail told StockWatch that the auditor-general’s probe is unrelated to the three administrative and one disciplinary investigation into potential violations of the environmental authority’s conditions.
