Inflation in Cyprus rose by just 0.2 per cent in April, according to the latest data from the Cyprus Statistical Service (CyStat), mainly due to falling prices in petroleum products and electricity.
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased marginally to 117.31 points from 117.25 in March, marking a monthly rise of 0.06 points.
The most notable changes in economic categories on an annual basis were seen in agricultural products, which surged by 9.3 per cent, and services, which climbed by 3.7 per cent.
Meanwhile, petroleum products dropped by 9.4 per cent, and electricity declined by 8.8 per cent.
Compared to the previous month, the sharpest decline was recorded in electricity, which fell by 8.5 per cent.
On a year-on-year basis, restaurants and hotels saw the highest increase at 5.2 per cent, followed by education at 3.7 per cent.
In contrast, clothing and footwear experienced the biggest drop at 7.1 per cent, while transport declined by 3.6 per cent.
When compared to March 2025, the most pronounced changes were observed in clothing and footwear, which rose by 4.7 per cent, and in housing, water, electricity and gas, which fell by 3.1 per cent.
For the four-month period from January to April 2025, restaurants and hotels rose by 4.5 per cent, and education by 3.7 per cent, whereas clothing and footwear fell by 5.8 per cent.
In terms of impact on the CPI, the primary positive contributors to the annual change were food and non-alcoholic beverages, which added 0.59 points, and restaurants and hotels, which added 0.55 points.
By contrast, the biggest negative contribution came from the transport category, which reduced the index by 0.66 points.
More specifically, catering services had the strongest upward influence with 0.57 points, followed by fresh fruit with 0.37 points.
Conversely, petroleum products had the greatest downward impact, subtracting 0.25 points from the index.
Compared to March, the category of housing, water, electricity and gas had the largest negative effect on the index, reducing it by 0.51 points.
Meanwhile, increases in clothing contributed 0.20 points, and airfares added 0.17 points. Electricity alone exerted the most negative monthly impact at -0.48 points.
