Residents in Nicosia and its western suburbs on Wednesday faced reduced access to drinking water after a serious fault was detected in a main water supply pipeline.

The water development department (WDD) confirmed the issue, saying the damage has caused a drop in water pressure across large parts of the capital. The disruption is affecting both households and businesses.

Engineers are working urgently to repair the damaged pipe. The WDD said teams are doing all they can to restore the full water supply as quickly as possible. However, no exact timeline was given for when the problem will be resolved. In the meantime, the public has been urged to limit water use to essential needs only.

“We ask everyone to reduce their consumption to the minimum until the fault is repaired,” the department stated.

The fault highlights the vulnerability of ageing infrastructure and the pressure on Cyprus’ water network during warm weather and high demand. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the damage.
